Guillermo Ochoa is the best Mexican goalkeeper according to FIFA

A lot has been said about Guillermo Ochoa and his talent to be a solid goalkeeper throughout his career, and FIFA has taken notice of it. Whether it was his stint in Ligue 1, where he stood out with AC Ajaccio, or his performances during the World Cup, especially against Brazil in 2014.

That’s why FIFA decided to include his picture alongside Iker Casillas, Manuel Neuer, and Gianluigi Buffon, among others, asking which goalkeeper would you rather have during a penalty shootout? Implying that Ochoa is the only Mexican that could be part of that list.

But his appearance not only raises the question of why the chose him, but also stands out the absence of other CONCACAF goalkeepers, as he’s the only North American on the image. Neither Keylor Navas nor Jorge Campos were mentioned.

Along Alisson and Sergio Goycochea, FIFA only included three goalkeepers from the American continent. The list also includes Edouard Mendy, Petr Cech, Tim Krul, Ali Beiranvand, Kasper Schmeichel, Essam El-Hadary, Samir Handanovic, Thibaut Courtois, Hugo Lloris and Danijel Subasic.

Mexican followers reacted to his designation

The critics to FIFA’s decision of including the Club América goalkeeper instead of any other were immediate, remembering that Guillermo Ochoa has received 26 straight goals via penalty kick, a record in Liga MX.

The people also remembered that he was under the goal when Mexico lost 7-1 against Chile in the Copa América, and even mentioned the 508 goals he has received with Las Águilas -the most by a Club América goalkeeper- and the 400 he received in Europe, numbers that Jorge Campos never had when he was still playing soccer.

What did Jorge Campos had to say?

When asked about the matter, and if he considered that he was the best Mexican goalkeeper, Jorge Campos didn’t flinch and said that he accepted the designation if that is what people believed, although he h as the statistics to back him up.

In 1993 the International Federation of Football History and Statistics named him the third best goalkeeper of the world, just behind Peter Schmeichel and Sergio Goycochea. Then, in 2011, he was in the top 10 of best goalkeepers of the last quarter of the century.
