The World Cup qualifiers are usually a headache for any coach of the Mexican National Soccer Team and Gerardo Martino proved that he is no exception. The Argentinean coach pointed out what has been his worst year at the helm of Mexico.

Tata spoke exclusively with Azteca Deportes and assured that a match like the one that the Mexican National Team will play against Chile is useful for him to see some of the players he is excited about. Even with those who are experiencing their first call-up with the Mexican senior team.

Gerardo Martino talks about the new players

For 'Tata', the Mexican National Soccer Team has reached an agreement in order to avoid bothering any of the Mexican clubs and still be able to take players who deserved a chance for their great performances. Such is the example of Carlos Acevedo from Santos Laguna or Marcelo Flores from Arsenal.

"I think that before and after the match with Ecuador, we should be well prepared, complementing ideas with the clubs and the Federation where we do not interfere with the schedule. These are interesting fixtures because they allow us to see many young players, some of whom are just starting to appear but who create excitement," he said.

Mexican Soccer Team Worst Year

Gerardo Martino did not hesitate to say that the worst year he has had with the Mexican National Team has undoubtedly been 2021. Not only because he lost the two finals against the United States (the Nations League and the Gold Cup), but also because of the losses to the United States and Canada in the CONCACAF qualifiers, on the road to Qatar 2022.

"Of the three years, the worst in terms of results and soccer development. I understand that it was good to reach the finals of both tournaments, whereas I also understand that it was bad to lose both of them. My rating has to do with the last combo of the qualifiers as we lost to the United States and Canada, it is definitely the worst year", said the Argentinean.

The Mexican squad will close the 2021 year facing Chile National Team using mostly youth players.

Mexico vs Chile at Austin, Texas

History will be made at Q2 Stadium this month. For the first time ever, the Mexican men’s National Soccer Team will play in Austin. They’re facing off in a friendly against Chile on Wednesday, Dec. 8 at 8:30 p.m. CT at Q2 Stadium, Austin FC's home stadium that opened this summer.

The match is part of the 18th annual MexTour, a series of friendly matches that Mexico plays at stadiums across the U.S. It will be Mexico’s sixth and final match in the 2021 MexTour, and an important one as Mexico looks ahead to three FIFA World Cup qualifiers in January. In MexTour’s 18 year history, Mexico has never before played in Austin.

As a city with a substantial Mexican-American population, this is a big deal for Austin.
