Given that the game will be played outside of an official FIFA match window, Gerardo “Tata” Martino will only call Liga MX players, especially the young talents he’s been following for a while and that have stood out both with their teams and with El Tri academy teams.

Martino will use this game to see the possible players that could earn a spot in the final roster of the Mexican national team that will play in Qatar 2022, as he still has doubts in some of the areas, especially on the midfield and the offense.

Even if he’ll call players like Henry Martín or Rogelio Funes Mori, who are already established in the usual roster but haven’t been able to find the net, to give them the chance of recover their confidence, he also knows that there’s other players that have deserved their call-up for a while.

The three players that deserve their call up

Gerardo Martino is aware that the game against Guatemala will also serve to know the players that will be the base of the Mexican national team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as most of the starting players on the current roster won’t make it to the next World Cup.

That’s why according to the report of sports journalist Rubén Rodríguez, one of the players that will be on the squad and is getting closer to be considered as part of the usual roster is Santiago Giménez, especially now that he’s become the main striker for Cruz Azul.

The second player that has earned his right to be considered by Martino is Erik Lira, as the Cruz Azul defensive midfielder has been one of the most constant players in Liga MX, not only for Clausura 2022 but since he was playing for Pumas.

Jesús Angulo will return to El Tri

The last player that has missed the last call ups from Martino is Jesús Angulo, who recently joined Tigres after being one of the best players in the Atlas pursue for their second title and first in over 70 years. Angulo debuted with El Tri in 2018, and has played five games, all of them were friendly matches.
