This time, his dismissal didn’t have to do with his involvement in any sort of scandal, on the contrary, everyone in the club, from his teammates to the owner said that he was one of the most determined and compromised persons they’ve met.

His departure from Antigua GFC after just six months, in which he helped them reach the semifinals, had to do with economical problems and a restructure the club was going through, as Peña was the highest-paid player on the roster.

Since then, “Gullit” has been looking for a club to continue his career, especially after he said he has yet much more to give to soccer. And although he was linked to several Liga MX and Liga de Expansión clubs, nothing happened other than conversations. Until now, that USL Championship newest club Monterey Bay FC offered him a contract for their first season in US Soccer second flight.

Who is Monterey Bay FC?

Monterey Bay FC was founded a year ago, on February 21st, although they will play their first season this year, when they visit Phoenix Rising FC in the opening game of the 2022 season. The team is based in Monterey County, California and will be part of the Western Conference.

Owned by Ray Beshoff, the Union is a continuation of Beshoff’s soccer project that started as Fresno FC, although the team disappeared after the 2019 USL Championship season, given that he couldn’t secure the construction of a Soccer-Specific Stadium, which is why he relocated and renamed the franchise.

“Gullit” Peña’s professional career
