It’s no lie to say that Carlos Vela is one of the best active Mexican players, as he’s still playing at a high level and is ready to face his fifth season as a Designated Player with Los Angeles FC, but his career with Mexico National Team has been interrupted multiple times.

Gerardo Martino doesn’t want to call younger midfielders, even if they’re needed

That’s why after a 3-year absence from wearing El Tri’s colors, Vela decided to put an end to the rumors placing him in Mexico National Team’s radar again, as he said his time with El Tri had passed and it was time for younger players to take the lead.

Before the announcement, Gerardo “Tata” Martino was considering calling Carlos Vela for the first time since his arrival in El Tri’s dugout, given that there’s a high chance that Hirving “Chucky” Lozano misses the upcoming FIFA match window.

But now, the name of a new Mexican player has arisen now that Bayern Munich have shown interest in him, as Cruz Medina will be trying out with the Bavarian squad, although Bayern is not the only German team interested in him.

Who is Cruz Medina?

Born in 2006 in California on a Mexican household, Cruz Medina started playing soccer since he was 4 years old. He currently is part of MLS side San José Earthquakes, as he plays with their academy teams, but has yet to sign a homegrown contract.

Medina plays as a midfielder and given that he was awarded with the Golden Ball in the 2021 MLS Next Cup on the U-15 category, a few teams in Europe were interested in his talent. Alongside Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig and FC Mainz 05 also requested to have him on trials.

Can he play for Mexico National Team?

Medina has both Mexican and American citizenships, both of his parents were born in the US, which is why, so far, he’s been part of the US Soccer academy teams, starting with the U-15 and now with the U-17 squad, although he could decide to play for Mexico National Team in the future.
