Mexico National Team suffered more than they had to on Wednesday night in the match played on Estadio Azteca against Panama, where they barely managed to obtain the victory with a lone goal scored by Raúl Jiménez, who made his reappearance on the pitches after three games.

Mexico National Team was able to beat Panama thanks to a penalty kick

Jiménez scored the goal on his signature move: a penalty kick, which was possible after an alleged foul over Diego Lainez, who jumped on the pitch at 66’ and become the revulsive El Tri needed to create the danger “Charly” Rodríguez and “Cata” Domínguez couldn’t.

But on the play that led to the penalty, it’s not visible a clear contact over Diego Lainez’s leg, who dribbled away to Panamanian defenders inside the penalty box before falling. The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) didn’t ask the referee to check the play, something they did some plays before, when Mexico got a goal annulated after the ball already had left the pitch.

What’s the new nickname that Lainez received?

El Tri followers and even TV commentators couldn’t help to notice the similarities of the penalty to the one that Arjen Robben allegedly received during the 2014 FIFA World Cup on the round of 16, where the Netherlands eliminated Mexico on an identical play, where Rafa Márquez never touched Robben, but still it was called as a foul. On internet, people already are calling him the “New Robben” or the “Mexican Robben.”
