With the back-to-back Liga MX titles, is Atlas FC better than Chivas?

Clausura 2022 came to an end on Sunday night with Atlas FC becoming the third team in Liga MX that wins back-to-back titles, as even if Club de Futbol Pachuca defeated 2-1 Atlas in the second leg of the final, Los Rojinegros became champions thanks to the 3-2 aggregate.

The game was marked by the referee’s protagonism that ended up hurting both teams, the penalty kick that gave Atlas FC the goal was debatable, and the decision of sending off Aníbal Chará on the second half could have been avoided, as well as forgiving Luis Chávez at the end of the game.

And even if Los Rojinegros were down on the score sheet after 8 minutes, as Romario Ibarra opened the score sheet with a ‘Golazo’, Atlas were able to endure the high pressure with which Pachuca started the game and were able to tie the game in the first half with a penalty kick scored by Julio Furch.

Pachuca took the advantage once again a minute before the first half ended thanks to Nicolás Ibañez, but Los Tuzos never figured out a way of breaking the defensive strategy that Atlas placed in the second half, the signature move of Diego Cocca, who made Atlas one of the most solid teams in Liga MX.

Is Atlas better than Chivas now?

But it wasn’t just the back-to-back titles that Atlas won after a 71-year drought without a single championship, as they also were awarded with the Champion of Champions trophy, given that they won both short tournament of the 2021-22 Liga MX season.

Although it’s impressive that Atlas was able to achieve the feat, that has only been attained by Pumas and Club León since the short tournaments were established back in 1996, there’s another stat that places them in the conversation for being considered one of the big Liga MX teams.

In just a year, Atlas has won two Liga MX titles, the same number of Championships that Chivas has won since the Vergara Family acquired the team back in 2002, evidencing that El Rebaño Sagrado is far from the grandeur that characterized them in the past.

Will that change anytime soon?

As if that wasn’t enough, with Amaury Vergara as owner and Ricardo Peláez as sporting director, it looks complicated that Chivas will be lifting a new trophy anytime soon, as the team has become a mid-table club that aspires only to make it into Liguilla instead of fighting for the title season after season.
