Cruz Azul couldn’t carry out the feat and were eliminated in the quarterfinals of Clausura 2022 even if they managed to beat 1-0 Tigres in Estadio Universitario. Unfortunately for them, the 1-1 aggregate gave Tigres the ticket to semifinals thanks to their position on the standings.

Javier Aquino became the villain for Los Felinos in the Tigres vs Cruz Azul

La Máquina showed sings of vindication early in the game, as they had an aggressive start that ended up in the first goal for Cruz Azul after only 19 minutes of the game, when Santiago Giménez’s high pressure paid off.

“Chaquito” pressured Javier Aquino after the Tigres midfielder stole the ball from the attacker near his own goal, but instead of clearing it he tried to control the ball, giving Giménez the chance of stealing it and passing the ovoid to Cristian Tabó, who shoot at point-blank.

After that play, Cruz Azul had several opportunities to add to the scoreboard, but the lack of aim, added to the good luck that Tigres had in the last zone of the pitch, prevented them from scoring again hence leaving them out of the playoffs.

What will happen to Juan Reynoso?

The elimination of La Máquina in the quarterfinals could mean the end of an era for Cruz Azul, as there’s uncertainty about Juan Reynoso’s future in front of the Cementeros, given that the irregular results that they had during the season didn’t sit well with Cruz Azul’s board.

Jaime Ordiales, La Máquina’s sporting director, has been looking to replace Juan Reynoso since he returned to Cruz Azul this season, as the enmity that exists between them was born given that Ordiales never trusted in Reynoso’s capabilities to make Cruz Azul Liga MX champion again.

Even if Reynoso proved him wrong on the first season that he was in Cruz Azul’s dugout, Ordiales demanded that La Máquina won a new title this semester if Reynoso wanted to fulfill his contract, something that didn’t happen as they were eliminated from both Liga MX and CONCACAF Champions League.

Who is the coach that will replace him?

According to reports from TUDN, Reynoso won’t return to Cruz Azul’s dugout for Apertura 2022 as Ordiales already has a new coach in line to take over the team: Ricardo Ferretti, who recently became available after parting ways with FC Juárez, where he failed to establish a winning project.
