Coaching is Leaño's natural habitat, although he has held various managerial positions throughout his career in professional soccer, he has never hidden the fact that his main goals have to do with coaching on the pitch.

How did he become a coach?

Leaño's origins and his passion for soccer date back to 2006. César Luis Menotti arrived in La Perla Tapatía to coach Los Tecos. Leaño saw a great learning opportunity and became the legendary Argentine coach's personal driver.

Subsequently, he continued his training to become a head coach. Marcelo Michel did not play soccer professionally, but he was always clear about his path.

That connection with Menotti allowed him, years later, to integrate Fernando Signorini into his coaching staff at Coras. El Ciego, as Signorini is known, was the historic personal physical trainer of Diego Armando Maradona. He also worked with Lionel Messi at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

When did he make his debut as a coach and what did he win?

In 2012, Leaño had his first high-demand experience at Chivas: he was appointed sporting director of the project headed by Johan Cruyff. Subsequently, in 2013 he made his coaching debut with Venados de Mérida. He also gained experience at Coras de Tepic and Zacatepec.

His big moment came in 2018 when he took over as head coach of Necaxa. Leaño broke a record at the helm of Los Rayos: he became the youngest coach to manage in the Mexican first division, at just 30 years old. With the hydrocalid team he also won his first championship: the 2018 Supercopa MX, in which his team defeated Rayados de Monterrey.

Marcelo Michel Leaño's record with Chivas

Marcelo Michel Leaño is the coach with the worst efficiency in the Ricardo Peláez era, who was appointed Chivas' sporting director on November 26, 2019.

He has coached 15 regular tournament games, in which he has recorded four wins, four ties, and seven losses, scoring 16 of 45 points, for an effectiveness rate of 35.56 percent.

Fans are fed up with the poor results and clamored for his departure after Puebla came from behind against Guadalajara on Day 7 of the Clausura 2022.

Fans criticize Marcelo Michel Leaño because he has never won two games in a row, but has lost three in a row, which has not happened to the team since the 2019 Apertura, although they have had worse streaks in previous years.
