How did the barras get into Mexican soccer, which triggered the Liga MX brawl?

Taylor appeared in the spotlight in 2017 when he agreed to go on ESPN's Futbol Picante program. The American was then on trial for stopping the return of Gustavo Matosas, Uruguayan strategist, to the national soccer.

Why is Greg Taylor controversial?

The 54-year-old promoter has a long history in Mexican soccer and in 2020 obtained the purchase of Querétaro from Grupo Caliente for the Guardianes 2020 tournament.

Taylor, in addition to being a franchisee, is a player promoter with his company Promenage, with which he represents players, managers, and coaches.

In January 2021, he was accused of being the alleged leader of a corruption network with which he pocketed millions thanks to the purchase and sale of overpriced players in Mexican soccer.

It was journalist Amir Ibrahim, from ElQuintanaRoo.mx, who reported that Taylor is the leader of this system, which was baptized as El Cartel del Gol and in which coaches such as Gustavo Matosas, Chepo de la Torre, Miguel Herrera, Francisco Palencia, Guillermo Vázquez and Antonio Mohamed are allegedly involved.

How did his system of representation work?

Taylor is said to have placed his representatives in certain Liga MX teams in order to have control of player transactions. Without a FIFA agent's license, Manuel Velarde, former president of Gallos Blancos, was said to be the intermediary.

According to the investigation, Taylor obtained players' transaction rights at a relatively low value and offered them at inflated prices, in order to obtain commissions and distribute profits among his collaborators.

The investigation investigates that Gustavo Matosas used this system in 2012 to request a commission from promoter Fernando Pavón for the signing of Matías Britos with León.

All this led to the dismissal of the Uruguayan coach from Atlético San Luis in 2019. There was even talk that Matosas would have done the same in 2011, when he coached Querétaro, with the signings of Efraín Cortés, Gustavo Moure, Raúl Ferro, Jairo Castillo and Jaime Villegas.
