Just a couple of days after Cruz Azul parted ways with Juan Reynoso after La Máquina were eliminated in the quarterfinals of Clausura 2022 given the lack of aim that they had against Tigres, they have found their new coach.

Cruz Azul is close to sign the coach that Chivas wanted for Apertura 2022

According to reports from sports journalist César Luis Merlo, and Jorge Ramos from ESPN, Diego Aguirre will be the new coach of Cruz Azul for Apertura 2022, and it won’t be long before La Máquina officially announces his arrival.

For the past couple of weeks, Diego Aguirre had been in conversations with Chivas, as El Rebaño has been looking for a new coach since parting ways with Marcelo Michel Leaño and the Uruguayan coach had become the favorite to replace him.

But given how long it’s been taking for Chivas to decide on a new coach, Cruz Azul saw the opportunity and decided to negotiate with their top candidate, who now will be in La Máquina’s dugout for Apertura 2022 and is ready to do some changes in the roster.

He’s looking to part way with at least three players

One of the first decisions that Diego Aguirre will take now that he’s Cruz Azul’s coach, is to lower the age of the roster, as several players that Reynoso kept in the starting XI were shutting the door to younger players, like José de Jesús Corona did with Sebastián Jurado.

Although “Chuy” Corona is still under contract, La Máquina will try to sell him over the summer given that Jurado has proven to be an outstanding goalkeeper, but much younger than Corona, and with the return of Andrés Gudiño will leave Corona without many options.

Along Corona, Pablo Aguilar and Rafael Baca have a foot and a half outside Cruz Azul, as the former will become a free agent in June and Cruz Azul is not planning on renewing him, and the latter is despised by La Máquina followers.

Three additions of Reynoso could also leave La Máquina

Now that Reynoso is gone, three other players could follow his steps, as Rómulo Otero, Luis Ángel “Quick" Mendoza and Joaquín “Shaggy” Martínez are not part of the plans that the Uruguayan coach has for next season.
