Fernando “Tano” Ortíz has made Club América look like the team that they should have been from the start of Clausura 2022, as they have five games without knowing what a defeat is, including four straight victories.

The players that Fernando Ortíz doesn’t want in Club América

On those four victories, Las Águilas have scored three goals in every single game except for one, against Club Necaxa, a game that ended up winning on the last minutes of the match with a goal from Diego Valdés, who found regularity once Santiago Solari left Club América.

Probably the best thing that Solari made for Club América was to request the addition of two players: Diego Valdés and Álvaro Fidalgo, as the Spanish midfielder has been one of the most consistent players for América and has become an essential player for Fernando Ortíz.

But even with the outstanding performances that he’s having, the thing that Ortíz did to give Fidalgo the protagonism he currently is having was returning Richard Sánchez to the starting XI, as with Solari, the Paraguayan midfielder had been erased from the squad.

Ortíz’s secret for his good streak

Since “El Tano” took over Las Águilas, he established a more offensive game style than the one that Solari used to propose, as instead of having most of the players on their own half of the pitch, they now control the midfield and apply a high pressure to their rivals.

That was something evident against Xolos de Tijuana, as they forced two mistakes in the first half that translated into the partial victory that made them have a more comfortable game, as the pressure was in Xolos side.

But the offensive style is not the only thing that Ortíz has changed in América, as he also builds a strategy depending on the rival that they’re facing that week. Against Xolos, given that their pitch is synthetic grass, Las Águilas trained most of the week on a pitch of similar conditions so they would adapt better.

Will he remain as Las Águilas coach?

It’s yet to be seen what Santiago Baños and Emilio Azcárraga decide to do once Clausura 2022 is over, as they’ve said that for now, they’re not looking for another coach but that for Ortíz to remain a season more, Las Águilas will have to reach the semifinals.
