Even if things have turned back on track for Club América in recent weeks thanks to the outstanding performances that Las Águilas have had under the coaching of Fernando “Tano” Ortíz, the problems for them are still far from over.

Las Águilas currently stand 11 after 13 rounds of Clausura 2022, with 16 points thanks to four victories, four draws and five defeats, and even if they are qualified to Repechaje for now, they still need to earn at least six more points of the remaining 12 if they want to clinch a playoff berth.

Club América is right in the middle of a cluster that goes from the seventh place -Club León, with 19 points- all the way down to the 15 place -Club Necaxa, with 14 points- that are aspiring to earn one of the six spots left of Repechaje.

Ortíz and Las Águilas know that they must keep up the good work if they want to transcend this season, as Santiago Baños and Emilio Azcárraga requested for Club América to reach the semifinals if they want to keep Ortíz on the bench.

Guillermo Ochoa will leave no matter what happens

But regardless of the outcome for Las Águilas this season, Guillermo Ochoa, who is on the last months of his contract with Club América and hasn’t started negotiating his renewal, will end up leaving El Nido sooner rather than later.

The 36-year-old goalkeeper knows that is on the last part of his career and moving to the MLS would mean a paycheck increase, as well as more security for his family. Reports suggest that he already received a few offers from MLS teams to join them.

Club América knows of his decision and are already looking for a new goalkeeper that can replace Ochoa, as Óscar Jiménez is also on the last months of his contract and is open to listen to offers from other Liga MX clubs.

Who is the goalkeeper that will arrive at Club América?

According to reports from TUDN, Las Águilas already asked Atlas what’s the price of Camilo Vargas, the goalkeeper that helped them win the second title in their history, for which he became the MVP of Apertura 2021. According to Transfermarkt, Vargas’ market value is set at $2.7 million.
