Chivas haven’t been able to have a solid project to follow since Marcelo Michel Leaño took over during Apertura 2021, after he replaced Victor Manuel Vucetich, who has been the coach that’s given El Rebaño the most stability since Amaury Vergara became the owner of the team.

Last season, thanks to the points that Vucetich earned, Chivas were able to access Repechaje as the standing 12, but they were eliminated by Club Puebla on a penalty shootout after they had the advantage on two occasions.

For Clausura 2022, El Rebaño Sagrado has played 11 games, as they have a pending one against Monterrey, but things haven’t gone their way, as they currently have the same number of points than Club América, who are going through one of the worst crises of their history.

That’s why Amaury Vergara knows that a change of coach is needed for next season if Chivas aspires to be a contender again, and Matías Almeyda is becoming the favorite to take over the role, as he already knows what it means to coach Chivas.

Matías Almeyda has only one request to return

Matías Almeyda is mostly remembered for being the last coach that gave Chivas a Liga MX title, as they won it in 2017. In total, he won five titles in the three years he coached El Rebaño Sagrado, including the CONCACAF Champions League in 2018.

The Argentine coach has never hidden the affection he feels towards Mexican soccer and especially Chivas and given that he’s on his last year of contract with MLS side San Jose Earthquakes, his return to El Rebaño is more than possible.

Almeyda is willing to return to Liga MX for a second stint with Chivas, the only thing that he is requesting to Amaury Vergara is to let him maintain the same coaching staff that he currently has, something that they didn’t allow him to do during his first stint.

How much will Chivas have to pay to acquire him?

When he agreed to arrive in San Jose Earthquakes, Almeyda established a clause on his contract that prevented him from leaving the Quakes before his contract expired, unless he was contacted by any national team or Chivas, which will allow him to arrive in El Rebaño for free.
