It’s no lie to say that Cruz Azul had one of the tightest schedules in Liga MX this season, as they played two games per week since February, given that they were playing in both Clausura 2022 and CONCACAF Champions League.

Cruz Azul: Jaime Ordiales already found Juan Reynoso’s replacement for next season

La Máquina had a vast roster that gave them the chance of facing both tournaments, but the injuries, added to the departures of both Jonathan “Cabecita” Rodríguez after the season had already started and Brayan Angulo, who rescinded his contract, diminished their opportunities.

Cruz Azul had to finish the season with only two forwards, Iván Morales, who arrived at La Máquina this season, and Santiago Giménez, who doesn’t have the full trust of Juan Reynoso and even if he was determinative in several games, he often had to start them on the bench.

The irregular season of Cruz Azul was crowned with a scoreless draw against Club América in the last game of the regular season, score that sent them to the eighth place of the standings, forcing them to play Repechaje.

A former player wants to return

Juan Reynoso knows that the irregularities presented during Clausura 2022 can’t happen again next season, which is why he is looking to strength the squad to avoid the deterioration of their performances as games pass by.

One of the priorities for La Máquina is to find at least a new striker, as Morales hasn’t fully adapted to Mexican soccer and Giménez can’t help the team if he’s benched. Luckilty for them, Jonathan Rodríguez is considering returning to Mexico.

The Uruguayan striker hasn’t adapted to Saudi Arabian soccer and has been criticized for his poor performances with Al-Nassr, as he’s played six games in the current season but has scored only one goal and has been benched due to his lack of contributions.

Can he return to Cruz Azul?

After forcing his sale at the start of the year, Cruz Azul was able to earn $6 million for his transfer even if his market value currently is set at $8.5 million. If La Máquina were to resign him, they will have to pay a similar sum or negotiate a loan, something that Al-Nassr might not be willing to do.
