Chivas couldn’t hold the advantage they had for most of the second half of the Clásico Tapatío and lost the chance of returning to the top part of Liga MX table and with it slowly becoming a contender for Clausura 2022.

Roberto “Piojo” Alvarado gave El Rebaño Sagrado the advantage at 66’ after a rebound that Camilo Vargas left in the goal box. But Marcelo Michel Leaño couldn’t find the way of maintaining the advantage, as his substitutions didn’t result.

For Michel Leaño, it didn’t matter if it was a game that was needed to be won by any means, and instead he decided to keep experimenting in the starting XI, something he did by not starting the game with a true forward.

He decided to keep both José Juan Macías and Ángel Zaldívar on the bench and instead place Jesús “Canelo” Angulo as a forward, but giving him the mobility outside the box, given that he can play both as an offensive midfielder and as a winger.

Chivas ended the game with three forwards

It didn’t take him too long to realize that his formation wasn’t working, which he tried to improve for the second half, when he gave José Juan Macías a chance to prove why he has the talent to play in Europe, placing him instead of Sebastián Pérez Bouquet, and moving “Canelo” Angulo to that spot.

Although José Juan Macías didn’t score the Chivas goal, he was an essential part of the play in which El Rebaño opened the score sheet, as he was the player that shoot against Vargas, proving Michel Leaño that the game could have been different if he had started the match with a forward.

After the goal, Marcelo Michel Leaño tried to replicate what Macías did and placed two more forwards on the pitch, although neither Ángel Zaldívar nor César Huerta had enough time and opportunities to help El Rebaño.

What will happen to Michel Leaño?

According to reports from sports journalist Miguel Arizpe, Amaury Vergara had decided that Marcelo Michel Leaño would lose his job if Chivas lost the Clásico Tapatío, something that did not happen. For now, it seems like Michel Leaño will stay in El Rebaño’s dugout for at least one more game.
