In Club América finally decided to shake things up and fired Santiago Solari after eight rounds of Clausura 2022, in which Las Águilas were only able to gather six points, as a result of one victory and three draws.

How was América left after Solari's departure and who will be his replacement?

Although during his stint as Las Águilas coach he didn’t have bad numbers –Club América was leader of Apertura 2021 with 10 victories and just two defeats–, the results on the current season were unbearable, as they had their worst start since the short tournaments were established in 1996.

The Azulcremas haven't been able to win in Estadio Azteca either, something that must worry both Emilio Azcárraga and Santiago Baños, as in the past teams were afraid of playing in América’s home turf, but now it has lost all its strength.

That’s why they’re monitoring different coaches, in order to have the perfect replacement for “El Indiecito”, and reports from Argentinean journal Diario Olé suggest that Las Águilas were in contact with Hernán Crespo.

Crespo’s numbers as a coach

Hernán Crespo is mostly remembered for his stint with Argentine National Team and with Italian side Parma FC, where he won UEFA Cup, the predecessor of UEFA Europa League, in the 1998-99 season, although he’s also had a profitable career as a coach.

He started coaching Parma academy teams in 2014, after he retired with the Gialloblù a season before. A season later he took over Modena FC, from Italy second flight, although he was there for just a season, before taking a three-season break in which he kept preparing himself.

In 2018 he arrived in CA Bánfield, where his stay was short given the bad results, but Defensa y Justicia gave him another chance, where he managed to win Copa Sudamericana in 2021. He currently is without a job after he decided to quit from Brazilian side Sao Paulo, where he helped O Soberano to win their first Estadual after 16 years.

Can Club América sign Hernán Crespo?

According to reports, Hernán Crespo earned $1.25 million on his year as Sao Paulo’s coach, a figure that is within Club América’s capabilities, as they were paying Santiago Solari $2 million per season, which opens the door to Crespo’s arrival in El Nido.
