Rafael Márquez is one of the most recognizable players Mexico has had in their history, as he played for seven years with FC Barcelona, where he won four La Liga titles and one Champions League, becoming the first Mexican achieving it.

The reason why Marcelo Michel Leaño is still coaching Chivas

Since his retirement from soccer in 2018, with the club he first debut in a top division, Atlas, he has been involved in the soccer industry, as he was sporting director of Los Zorros for the 2018-19 season and has also been studying to become a coach.

He had his first job coaching a team in Spain, with Real Alcalá, from Spanish third flight, although he only was five months in the position, as he decided to quit when Joan Laporta arrived in FC Barcelona for a second stint, as he was linked to the Blaugranas to take over the academy teams, something that didn’t happen.

Since then, he’s keep preparing for when his opportunity to coach again arrives, as he’s said he’s in no rush to return to the pitches. And given the current situation in which Club América currently is, that opportunity could arrive soon.

Will he coach Club América?

According to reports from TUDN, Rafa Márquez is one of the names Las Águilas are considering arriving in El Nido after Santiago Solari was sacked last week, given the poor results that he had during Clausura 2022, where he left América at the bottom of the table.

Given his closeness with TUDN, where he’s been an analyst for some Liga MX and Mexico National Team games, Márquez doesn’t see with bad eyes arriving in a team as big as Club América, as it will help him continue his career as a coach and acquire his UEFA Pro certification.

Who else can arrive in América?

Márquez is not the only coach considered to take over the team that currently has Fernando “Tano” Ortíz as interim coach, as reports have linked former Mexico National Team coach Juan Carlos Osorio in Las Águilas radar, as he’d be interested in returning to Mexican soccer.

From Argentina, reports have placed Hernán Crespo’s name close to Club América, as the former Albiceleste striker is without a team since he parted ways with Sao Paulo. Nicolás Larcamón, Club Puebla coach, is another coach that could arrive in El Nido, as Las Águilas are really interested in the Argentine coach given the season he’s having with La Franja.
