Since Matías Almeyda left Chivas in 2018 on bad terms with the back-then chairman José Luis Higuera, El Rebaño hasn’t been able to consolidate a project that returns them to front pages of Liga MX, as they haven’t won a title ever since.

But since Amaury Vergara took over the club on 2019, El Chiverío has lost all the protagonism they used to have, and not even Ricardo Peláez, who made Club América win two Liga MX titles, has been able to help El Rebaño to be a contender.

It seemed like Chivas was finally having regularity once José Manuel Vucetich took over the team, but Vergara decided to sack him alleging poor results, and in his place, he imposed Marcelo Michel Leaño, one of his closest friends.

Since Michel Leaño took over, Chivas has won only five games and the team looks adrift, as there’s not a solid plan but rather just experimenting. It seemed like Vergara didn’t mind, but he finally realized that El Rebaño needs a new coach to return them to the top places of Liga MX and Almeyda is his favorite option.

Can Almeyda return to Chivas?

Matías Almeyda is on his last year of contract with San Jose Earthquakes, team he joined for the 2019 MLS Season. According to reports, Almeyda had a clause on his contract that prevented him from leaving to another team that wasn’t either a national team or Chivas.

But said clause was voided for his last year, after he decided to decline the offer of coaching Chile National Team and fulfill his contract and given the tense relationship he has with the Quakes management, his return to Liga MX seems more possible by the day.

Which players will leave El Rebaño?

Matías Almeyda hasn’t denied the affection he feels for the Mexican soccer and Chivas, in particular, which is why he’s aware of the problems the current roster has, as Michel Leaño hasn’t known hot to balance experience with age.

That’s why when he arrives in Chivas for a second stint, he will clean the locker room from players that were an asset for El Rebaño in the past but now are blocking the development of young talents. For now, the players that will leave are Jesús Molina, Hiram Mier, Miguel Ponce, and Jesús Sánchez.
