One of the biggest surprises in Repechaje was the elimination of CF Monterrey on their home turf against Atlético San Luis, who started losing the game but thanks to Facundo Waller, they were able to equalize the score and send the game to the penalty shootout.

San Luis only needed eight minutes after the second half started to score two goals that almost gave them the ticket to Liguilla in regular time after Monterrey opened the score in the first half, but a last-minute goal from Michell Rodríguez prolonged Rayados defeat.

Marcelo Barovero became the hero for Atlético, as he stopped the penalties of Vincent Janssen and Maxi Meza, that added to the failed kick of Rodolfo Pizarro gave the ticket to Liguilla to San Luis and left Monterrey out of the competition.

Although the bad start that Monterrey had in Clausura 2022 that got Javier Aguirre sacked is what made them miss the Liguilla, as they closed the regular season with six victories, two draws and three defeats with Victor Manuel Vucetich, they came to less in the final part of the season.

Will Vucetich leave Monterrey?

Monterrey’s management knows that what prevented them from playing in Liguilla was the irregular performances that the roster had during the regular season, which is why they’re already planning on having several movements for Apertura 2022.

They know that they need to give a full season, including preseason, to Victor Manuel Vucectich to establish the coaching system that he likes, which is why they will keep him on the dugout for Apertura 2022, although they will part ways with some of the players.

According to reports, one of the players that hasn’t been able to adapt, hence the low production that Monterrey had during Clausura 2022 is Vincent Janssen, who underperformed after Rogelio Funes Mori was sidelined due to an injury.

Are they looking for new additions?

Monterrey knows that they need to add players in offense to regain their scoring streak, which is why they are looking to negotiate a loan with La Liga side Celta de Vigo to acquire Orbelín Pineda, as “El Maguito” could improve the current roster and is in need of playing time.
