After closing the regular season if Clausura 2022 with only one victory in the last five games that Cruz Azul played, La Máquina needed to show why they were considered to be a real contender at the start of the year, something that they managed to do.

Juan Escobar opened the scoresheet for Cruz Azul after 56 minutes and although La Máquina couldn’t win the game in the 90 minutes given that Rodrigo Aguirre scored the equalizer just two minutes before the end of the game.

But instead of bringing back the ghosts of the past 23 years, Juan Reynoso found a way of taking advantage of the situation and thanks to the outstanding performance of Sebastián Jurado, La Máquina managed to win 4-1 in the penalty shootout.

The positive result helped Cruz Azul regain the confidence lost in the last games of the regular season, as well as helping Juan Reynoso to still have a chance of staying in Cruz Azul once the season is over, although Jaime Ordiales already has a replacement waiting to arrive.

Who is the coach that will arrive at Cruz Azul?

Juan Reynoso still has six more months on his contract, as he signed until December, but the enmity that exists between him and Jaime Ordiales could prevent him from fulfilling his contract, as Ordiales is waiting for the end of the season to part ways with him.

According to David Faitelson during his participation in ESPN, La Máquina is negotiating with Hugo Sánchez his arrival at Cruz Azul’s dugout for Apertura 2022 given that the sporting director of Los Cementeros has him as the priority for the next season.

Sánchez hasn’t coached since 2012 but he was close to returning to the pitches for Clausura 2021 with Cruz Azul, although in the end La Máquina decided to hire Juan Reynoso, who gave them the ninth Liga MX title after a 23-year drought.

He still has a chance of remaining as Cruz Azul coach

Reynoso still has an option to remain in front of Cruz Azul for Apertura 2022 and finish his contract before leaving, as Ordiales demanded a title to ensure his continuity, meaning that La Máquina will have to win their 10th Liga MX title to keep Juan Reynoso on the dugout for one more season.
