One of the most controversial decisions that Juan Reynoso has taken in Clausura 2022 was to give Sebastián Jurado the starting role in Cruz Azul even after José de Jesús “Chuy” Corona was healthy to return to the pitches.

Cruz Azul: He went from being criticized to become the hero of La Máquina

Given the tight schedule that La Máquina had during Clausura 2022, Reynoso decided to rotate his players to give them some rest, including “Chuy” Corona, which is why he gave Jurado the starting role against Club Puebla, where he was involved in mistakes that gave La Franja the 3-1 victory.

But after Corona got injured prior the game against CF Montréal in Canada, Jurado had to suit up and assume the starting role once again until “Chuy” could return to the pitches, or at least that what people thought, as Sebastián Jurado has remained as the starter ever since.

The lack of regularity was evident on the first games he played, as his mistakes costed La Máquina several points, but during the Repechaje game against Club Necaxa, he showed why Cruz Azul considered him to be the successor of “Chuy” Corona, Óscar “Conejo” Pérez and Miguel Marín.

What did he do to improve his performances?

The 24-year-old goalkeeper became the hero that Cruz Azul needed to return to the quarterfinals after having an irregular ending in both CONCACAF Champions League and Clausura 2022, as he saved most of the shots that Necaxa tried and then, in the penalty shootout, he stopped two of the penalty kicks.

According to the report of Reacción en Cadena, his improvement in the last few games that Cruz Azul has played is because he stays longer in La Máquina facilities once the training session is over, as he practices more.

But what helped him the most for the game against Necaxa was that one of the things he practices the most is the penalty kicks, added to the fact that he studies his rival prior the game, he had the advantage for the penalty shootout.

Will he remain as Cruz Azul goalkeeper?

It’s yet to be seen what will happen with “Chuy” Corona once Cruz Azul’s participation in Clausura 2022 is over, as the 41-year-old goalkeeper could decide to leave or retire, which is why Reynoso has decided to help Jurado regain his confidence.
