Landon Donovan is one of the most renown American players in the past decades, as he played in three World Cups and won four CONCACAF Gold Cups, although he’s mostly remembered for being one of the players that made the rivalry between El Tri and USMNT became what is now.

But his legend was formed mainly in MLS, where he played most of his career, especially with LA Galaxy, where he won 4 MLS Championships, two MLS Supporters’ Shields and one US Open Cup, as well as two more MLS Championships with San Jose Earthquakes at the start of his career.

The US former international also had a short stint in Liga MX, as he arrived in Club León in 2018 after one year of retirement, where he played for just one season, although he only played for six games and wasn’t able to score a single goal.

Now, four years after his arrival in Liga MX, Landon Donovan could return to Mexican soccer, this time as a coach, as he’s been coaching since 2020 in USL Championship, the United States’ second flight, and could do it in one of the biggest teams in Mexico.

What team can he coach?

Landon Donovan was present in Estadio Azteca for the game between Mexico National Team and the Stars and Stripes. During an interview, he was asked where does he sees himself in the future and if he would like to coach elsewhere, to what he answered with a hint: “what? Club América?”.

The possibility is open given that Las Águilas are looking for a coach to replace Santiago Solari, who left the team at the bottom of the table in Clausura 2022 and given that Donovan has had a successful career with San Diego Loyal, he could make the jump to the Mexican top-tier division.

It’s worth remembering that, back when he was on his best shape, he was linked multiple times to Club América, as he fulfilled all the requirements to become a worthy addition to Las Águilas, although he always declined, given that he was happy playing with LA Galaxy.

Las Águilas are still looking for a coach

For now, Club América has Fernando “Tano” Ortíz on the bench as the interim coach, but Emilio Azcárraga are still looking for a coach that can take over the team for the next season. So far, the coaches that have been linked are Nicolás Larcamón and Ricardo Ferretti.
