Cruz Azul finally had luck on their side, as they were, for once, the team that was able to score a last-minute goal to tie 2-2 the game against Tigres on their visit to El Volcán. The goal, although scored by José Ignacio Guerrero, was possible because Santiago Giménez became the hero La Máquina needed him to be.

Juan Reynoso was impressed by these Santos players and now he wants them for Cruz Azul

During the first half, Cruz Azul looked lost, as Tigres started pushing from the start, and they were able to open the score after just 11 minutes, when Gignac scored for a six straight game. Tigres looked dangerous as La Máquina defenders couldn’t stop their attacks on both flanks of the pitch and the high pressure.

A mistake made on their own side of the pitch was the key for the second goal of Tigres, as La Máquina defenders couldn’t clear the ball. Gignac recovered the ball and immediately passed it to Quiñones, who was open on the left side of the pitch. Quiñones assisted Juan Pablo Vigón, as he only had to push the ball to the bottom of the net.

It seemed like Cruz Azul wasn’t going to be able to recover from a 2-0 score, as they hadn’t showed any signs of associative soccer and were waiting to defend as they could, instead of trying to score. But when the first half was almost over, Luis Abram scored his first goal for La Máquina on a corner kick.

Second half of the match

For the second half, Reynoso understood that if he wanted to tie the game, he needed a player that fought for every ball, that’s why he gave Santiago Giménez the chance of proving why he could be part of Mexico National Team.

Both teams had multiple chances of scoring, but the lack of aim was a constant throughout the second half. And just as the game was about to end and Tigres were already celebrating their sixth victory in a row, Santiago Giménez showed why he deserves to be the starter for Cruz Azul.

The 20-year-old Mexican forward received the ball in the penalty box, with his back against the goal, but he didn’t give in to the pressure of Guido Pizarro, who pushed him outside the box before he ever got the chance of turning around.

When he was able to do it, he dribbled Pizarro on a play that left him on the floor, before passing the ball to Nacho Guerrero, who received the ball on the penalty mark and crossed his shot to leave Nahuel Guzmán out of the play.

Why does Reynoso refuse to start Santiago Giménez?

“Chaquito” Giménez keeps proving why he should be a starter with La Máquina. Since he scored his first brace, he has been one of Cruz Azul’s most dangerous players every time he’s on the field, although Reynoso still prefers to give Brayan Angulo the role, as he feels that what the Ecuadorian striker gives to the team on the offensive side is what they need, at least during the first half of the match.
