When Giovani dos Santos arrived in Club América back in 2019, he did it as one of the biggest additions to Las Águilas in recent years and with the promise of helping them to contend for Liga MX title every tournament, even if he couldn’t shine with LA Galaxy in the four seasons he played in the MLS.

Even if his arrival was at no cost for Las Águilas, given that the Galaxy didn’t renew his contract prior the start of the 2019 MLS Season and was a free agent for the first semester of that year, he became one of the highest salaries on the roster.

Emilio Azcárraga and Santiago Baños agreed to pay him $2 million per season, given his trajectory and the fact that he’s one of the most recognizable Mexican players in recent years, but his performances weren’t close to what he was asked to do.

He played 42 games in the span of four tournaments, where he was able to score just four goals and assist two times, numbers far from what was expected of a player of his potential and that made Baños refuse to give him a contract extension.

Why didn’t he was able to renew?

According to reports, both parties were engaged in negotiations to prolong his stay in El Nido, but Santiago Baños was decided to lower his salary, something that the older of the Dos Santos brothers refused to do.

Since then and given that he still expects having a high salary, the former U-17 World Champion has remained as a free agent, although things might change soon for him, as he was spotted training in Club América facilities.

Will he return to América?

As he wasn’t part of any team after February 1st, he’s still able to sign with any Liga MX team he wants to, and according to reports, Emilio Azcárraga doesn’t see with bad eyes his return, although he requested that Dos Santos gets in shape first, lower his salary, and has a special clause on his contract.

What’s the clause that Dos Santos will have?

Just like Mario Balotelli had during his stint in Liverpool, Las Águilas will include a clause of good conduct, as it’s well known that he likes to party, which is why they will prohibit him to attend to events where there’s a big crowd and alcohol is involved.
