Club América arrived at the semifinals of Clausura 2022 after defeating Club Puebla in quarterfinals by a 4-3 aggregate, on a series that was marked by the mistakes made by the referees, as they benefited La Franja in the first leg and Las Águilas in the second leg.
But the path that Las Águilas had to follow before arriving at this stage of Liguilla has been uphill, as the results that Club América achieved during the first half of the season had them away from the chances of even making it into Repechaje.
Santiago Solari left Las Águilas at the bottom of the table with only six points as a result of one victiry and three draws, but since Fernando “Tano” Ortíz took over the team, they have now become one of the most solid teams in Liga MX.
Ortíz not only helped them leave the bottom of the table, but also changed the face of the team completely, as they became a more offensive team with few defensive flaws, especially since Guillermo Ochoa recovered his level just in time to help them have a 10-game streak without a defeat.
Although he’s showed that he’s more than capable of successfully coaching a team like Club América, Emilio Azcárraga and Santiago Baños haven’t said a word about Fernando Ortíz’s continuity once Clausura 2022 is over.
But after Club Puebla announced that they extended Nicolás Larcamón for one more year, Las Águilas lost their top option to arrive at Las Águilas’s dugout for Apertura 2022, making Ortíz the best option to be named as coach for next season.
One of the things that leaned the scale on his favor is the good group chemistry that he has managed to build in the locker room, as the players respect him and are willing to follow him and his plan to the very last minute of the season.
Reports from TUDN inform that Club América already agreed to extend his stay in Las Águilas’s dugout and give him a new contract, which will include two more years with an option of adding a third if the results are good.
Diego Lainez's return to Club America is close, but Betis opposes it
