After closing the season with eight straight games without a single defeat, Club América became one of the teams that arrived at Liguilla with most chances of becoming protagonists, as they were able to beat teams from the bottom of the table up to contenders for Liga MX title.

The good streak that Las Águilas had in the second part of the season attains to the change of coach that Club América had, as Santiago Solari was sacked after eight rounds given that he couldn’t help the team to leave the bottom of the table.

Since then, Las Águilas have been on the market for a new coach, although they decided to take things slow and give Fernando “Tano” Ortíz the chance of coaching the first team as interim coach for the entirety of Clausura 2022.

What Emilio Azcárraga and Santiago Baños didn’t expect was the outstanding results that Las Águilas gathered with Ortíz on the dugout, neither finishing the season in the top four, avoiding playing Repechaje and waiting in the quarterfinals for their rival.

Baños already knows who the coach will be

Several names have been linked to Las Águilas in the past two months, from Ricardo “Tuca” Ferretti, who recently parted ways with FC Juárez, to Nicolás Larcamón, who has helped Club Puebla become a protagonist team in Liga MX after spending over 10 years fighting to get out of the bottom of the table.

But during an interview with ESPN, when asked about the future of Las Águilas, Baños revealed that even if they are looking for potential candidates, they have also established a few conditions for “Tano” Ortíz to remain as Club América coach.

If Las Águilas end up becoming Liga MX champions, the Argentine coach will have ensured his place in Club América’s dugout for Apertura 2022 and will be able to negotiate a new contract, something that seems attainable with the performances they’ve had recently.

What will happen if they don’t win Liga MX?

If Las Águilas don’t manage to become champions in Clausura 2022, Club América executives will have a meeting with Ortíz once Club América ends their participation to analyze the results and see if it’s a viable option for him to become the next Azulcrema coach.
