New year, new league. After a disappointing season where Chivas wasn’t able to play the Liguilla, for the first round of Clausura 2022, they will receive Mazatlán FC in Guadalajara. With only one new signing so far, Roberto “Piojo” Alvarado from Cruz Azul, they will try to keep the momentum gained during the preseason, where they won the three games the played, as well as scoring in every single match, something they were lacking off during Apertura 2021. Even Alvarado was able to score on his first game wearing Chivas’ jersey.

Chivas vs Mazatlán FC: Head to Head Record

This is the fourth time Chivas and Cañoneros will face each other, and Mazatlán has yet to earn their first victory against Chivas, something they’ll try to do for the first game of 2022, as the 2021-2022 Liga MX season returns to the pitches. Guadalajara has won two of the three previous encounters, and the teams tied the third game they’ve had.

This will be the second time Mazatlán visits Chivas’ home Estadio Akron, as the only previous encounter they’ve had was the first time they played against each other on September 26, 2020, a game that Chivas won by a 2-1 score.

The other two previous encounters were disputed at Mazatlán, with a 1-1 draw on Clausura 2021 and a 1-0 victory for Chivas on Apertura 2021.

Mazatlán is the newest team to join Liga MX, as the owner, Grupo Salinas, moved them from Morelia in 2020, hence why this will be the fourth time Chivas and Mazatlán face each other in the pitch.

According to FanDuel, a win by the home team has -120 odds, a clear sign that Chivas are favorites to win the three points. Mazatlán has +350 odds, which means it would be a surprise if they win the game, but it also means that you could win big money if they do. Finally, the draw is at +230 odds.

Chivas News

During the offseason, Roberto “Piojo” Alvarado joined Chivas side as the only addition so far, but giving his experience as Liga MX champion and international player, El Rebaño Sagrado had an immediate upgrade at offensive midfielder, and a big help for the lack of goals they had last season.

Chivas won all of their preseason games, starting with a comfortable 8-0 victory against Colima FC. For the second game they visited Mineros from Zacatecas, where they won by a 3-1 score. Lastly, they went to Aguascalientes to face Necaxa in a two-game encounter. Chivas won both games by 4-0 and 3-2 scores. Alvarado played 62’ during the first game and eh scored his first goal as a Chivas player.

Mazatlán FC News

Mazatlán is looking at Clausura 2022 as the season they finally reach their first Liguilla in its history, and they will try to do it with the help of their new players. Gonzalo Sosa, Argentinean forward, joined Los Cañoneros this offseason to fill the spot left by Camilo Sanvezzo, who left Mazatlán to join Toluca’s side.

They also added Nicolás Benedetti from América, a player that didn’t had enough play time with Solari’s squad but has a lot of potential that Mazatlán could benefit from. Other players that joined the squad prior the start of Clausura 2022 are Eduardo Bello, right winger out from Chilean Anofagasa and Jefferson Intriago, who played for Juárez last season.
