Alejandro Irarragorri, president of Grupo Orlegi and Orlegi Sports, has been directly involved in Liga MX since 2006, where he was named Vice-President of Querétaro FC, although he didn’t stay much with Gallos Blancos, alleging ideological differences with the back then owners.

Not long after, he joined Santos Laguna as Sporting Director and then was promoted to President of the Administrative Council of the club the following season, where he stayed until 2013, when he founded Grupo Orlegi and acquire the club. Since his arrival, Los Laguneros have won two Liga MX titles.

Grupo Orlegi also acquired 50% of the shares of Tampico Madero, from Mexico’s second flight, in 2016, and two years later became the only owners of La Jaiva Brava, although they haven’t had the success expected, as they’ve managed to have with their club brothers in Liga MX.

Atlas was the last team Irarragorri acquired, back in 2019 out from Grupo Salinas, owner of Club Puebla and Mazatlán FC. Atlas managed to win their first Liga MX title in more than 70 years just two years later after Grupo Orlegi took over Los Zorros. But now, they’re looking to get their hands in a new club.

Which club are Grupo Orlegi after?

A few years ago, Alejandro Irarragorri said that he was interested in expanding his sports empire to different latitudes, as there’s so much that they can do in Liga MX, given that they’ve won the highest prize in Mexican soccer with both of his teams.

That’s why they started negotiating with Spanish side Real Zaragoza, from La Liga Smartbank -Spanish second flight-, a few months ago, given that the Avispas are having economic problems that, if not solved soon, could mark their disappearance from professional soccer.

Not the only group after the acquisition of the Spanish club

Although Irarragorri and Grupo Orlegi are close to completing the acquisition of Real Zaragoza, from Spain, reports suggest that there’s another investor on the race for acquiring the Club: Cuban American Jorge Mas, who currently owns 90% of the shares of MLS side, Inter Miami FC.
