Chelsea won without much trouble against Lille (2-0), but the result was the least important because Lukaku did not play.

There are two reasons why Romelu Lukaku did not play. The first, because the Belgian has had a level far below what he had shown with his former team Inter and the second and as explained by Tuchel because he is tired physically and mentally.

The Belgian striker, the big signing of the summer transfer window for the Blues, had just seven touches in the win over Palace, including a cross, the lowest contribution by a player since this statistic began to be recorded in 2003-04 season.

Tuchel's words

"Each player has an individual fitness plan. If Lukaku has not been after the game it is because the physical team has prepared him that way," the coach said.

"Romelu has had a hard time in the last few games, he's tired physically and mentally because he's played so many starts in a row. We put in three other strikers and it worked," he added.

Since before the match against the French team, the German coach said the following:

"I think Lukaku was a little bit tired because he has played a lot, extra time and travel. Also, it wasn't his best game against Palace, so it's better if he comes off the bench and changes the game from there," Tuchel said.

However, Thomas Tuchel decided to not use Lukaku as a substitute, instead of the Belgian, the former PSG coach entered his compatriot Werner on the field.

Lukaku appears to be unfocused after his controversial remarks

Since Lukaku's words to Sky Sports Italia saying that he would like to return to Inter and that his departure was a bit hasty, the Belgian has been in the spotlight of Chelsea fans and the press and to his misfortune, the player has not delivered good performances.

The opportunity for the Belgian has been there, starting the last 6 games for the London team, however, he has not been sharp in front of goal.

Despite Lukaku being benched, Chelsea won and that makes Thomas Tuchel's point.

Lukaku's season at Stamford Bridge has not been straightforward and after 28 appearances this season he has scored just ten goals.
