Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur have Championship club West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Sam Johnstone high up their priority list as a replacement for their current goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. Hugo Lloris will be 35 in December and would be out of contract at the end of next season, Tottenham needs a long term option to succeed him and have identified Sam Johnstone. He would certainly fancy the move to North London, as it is a bigger opportunity for him to continue pushing for a place in the national team as well as it is a bigger stage in his career. Tottenham signed an Italian goalkeeper from Atalanta but don't see him as a long term replacement for Hugo Lloris.

Who is Sam Johnstone?

Sam Johnstone is an English professional goalkeeper who plays for recently relegated club West Bromwich Albion and the Three Lions of England. He began his career at Manchester United and went on 10 loans at eight different clubs including his hometown club, Preston North End before finally leaving the club in 2018 to join West Bromwich Albion. He was one of the standout goalkeepers in the Premier League last season despite his club relegating, pulling off a lot of significant saves. He earned him his first England callup and was part of the Three Lions Euro 2020 squad that lost to Italy in the final.

Why is Tottenham eyeing Sam Johnstone?

Tottenham Hotspur is in a goalkeeping dilemma at the moment. Hugo Lloris will be out of contract by the end of the season and at 35 is not performing at a top level again. He is also considering an option of leaving the North London club which he has played for since 2012, with a return to France in sight. Sam Johnstone too would be out of contract with West Bromwich Albion at the end of the season, at 28 and one of the best goalkeepers in English football in the last two years, he would be a good buy for Tottenham and should still have about five years left at the top of his game.

Which other Premier League clubs are interested in Johnstone?

West Ham United was interested in Sam Johnstone before they later went for French goalkeeper Alphonse Areola but the Three Lions goalkeeper is not short of suitors in the English league. Other than Tottenham who sees him as their number one goalkeeping priority, Southampton are also very interested in his signature as they consider him a better goalkeeper than their current duo of Alex McCarthy and Fraser Forster. The two clubs will battle it out for his signature.
