Jorge Campos is one of Mexico’s most renowned players, not only because of his ability in the pitch, as he used to play both as a goalkeeper and a striker, but for his eccentric jerseys and a charisma that still today, after 17 years of retiring, keeps entertaining TV viewers.

Campos will always be linked to Pumas UNAM, where he started his professional career and had some of his best years, especially in 1994 when he debuted with Mexico National Team in a World Cup, and then after the 1998-99 season, when El Tri became Confederations Cup champion.

But even after he’s seen as one of Pumas most emblematic players in its history, Jorge Campos wasn’t a die-hard fan of Los Universitarios while growing up, as his father was a Club América follower. But even then, he felt keen to support Cruz Azul, a team that he tried to join before arriving in Pumas.

Why didn´t Jorge Campos join Cruz Azul?

According to him, when he tried out with La Máquina, they told him that he was too short to be a goalkeeper and too skinny to be playing as a forward. Later in his career, Campos had the chance to wear Cruz Azul colors, during the 1997-98 Liga MX Season.
