Back in the day, when this Mexican striker was on his prime, he was asked to rig some of the matches Mexico National Team was going to dispute in exchange for $100,000. The only thing he had to do was stop scoring, forget how to play soccer.

During the 1996 Olympic games in Atlanta, Mexico National Team was one of the favorite teams after having a squad full of young promising players like Cuauhtémoc Blanco, Francisco Palencia, Pável Pardo and Óscar Pérez, which meant that their early elimination could suppose a fortune for gamblers.

That’s why Luis García, who was part of the team to strengthen the offensive side, as Olympics soccer squads can only have 3 players with more than 23 years, was asked to sabotage El Tri’s performance. Alongside Jorge Campos and Claudio Suárez, declined the offer.

How did El Tri perform in Atlanta?

Mexico was part of group C, with Italy, South Korea and Ghana. El Tri won their first match against Italy, but only managed to tie with both South Korea and Ghana. In quarterfinals, they lost against Nigeria by a 2-0 score.
