Jorge Campos is one of the most famous Mexican players in the history of soccer, not only for the eclectic jerseys he wore or for the charisma he’s always had, but also because he did what no one else was able to: be both a goalkeeper and a forward.

He remembers that he asked Miguel Mejía Barón to give him the chance of playing as a forward during his first season with Pumas after the lack of opportunities he had defending Los Universitarios goal, when Adolfo Ríos was the starter.

He played for multiple clubs in both roles, but when it came to Mexico National Team, he never had the chance to play as an attacker, given that FIFA didn’t like the idea when El Tri tried to register him as a goalkpeeper and a striker in the 1994 World Cup.

 

How did El Tri perform in United States 1994?

Miguel Mejía Barón was coaching El Tri for the 1994 World Cup, and during the round of 16 against Bulgaria he had the option of moving Jorge Campos from the goal to the offensive side of the pitch, but ultimately decided to keep him as a goalkeeper on the 1-1 draw that eventually had El Tri eliminated in a penalty shootout.
