Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo dominated the El Clasico for nine years together between 2009 when Cristiano Ronaldo joined Real Madrid and 2018 when he left for Juventus. Lionel Messi also departed at the beginning of this season.

The two players share a combined 11 Ballon d'Or between them in their years of fierce rivalry at the top level of their games for the two top European clubs. They boosted TV ratings as well as sponsorship deals and their departure has left a great void in the fixture.

Barcelona's natural successor for Lionel Messi is youngster Ansu Fati who is a La Masia product and was endowed with Messi's number 10 jersey when La Liga rule prohibits it from being vacant while Brazilian attacker Vinicius Jr is being tipped for Real Madrid to be their next biggest star.

The two young players could well and truly replace Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo considering their talents. Vinicius Jr earns about €77,000 per week at Real Madrid while Ansu Fati's new contract puts him ahead of the Brazilian with €94,000 per week.
