La Masia graduate Riqui Puig was one of the standout stars of the Quique Setien era but was immediately told by Ronald Koeman on assumption of office that he was not in his plans and that he should find a new club which Puig refused.

Puig fired back at Koeman and told him he'd rather spend another year in Barcelona B than go on loan despite having loan offers from other clubs. Despite being a fringe player last season, Puig scored the last kick in the penalty shootout that sent Barcelona to the Copa Del Rey final which they eventually won.

Koeman promoted youngsters Gavi and Nico ahead of Puig this season and the youngster was reported to be wanted at Roma by José Mourinho who is a big admirer of the Spanish youngster who has been likened to Xavi and Iniesta. Xavi Hernandez is also reported to be a fan of the youngster.

Koeman's sacking means a new breath of life for the youngster and an opportunity to once again deservedly fight for his place without a premeditated choice of leaving him on the bench, and he would be happy it came earlier before he gets shipped out on loan.
