Cristiano Ronaldo was left disappointed yesterday after his country, who needed just a draw to secure automatic qualification to the 2022 FIFA World Cup were beaten in Lisbon by Serbia thanks to Aleksandar Mitrovic's late winner.

Portugal opened the scoring in the second minute through Renato Sanches and Ajax's Dusan Tadic equalised later on for Serbia. When Portugal were hoping to wind up the time and celebrate their qualification, Fulham's Aleksandar Mitrovic scores the winner.

Ronaldo, who is the team's captain, has received a lot of criticism but has responded on social media. "Football has shown us time and again that sometimes it's the winding roads that lead us to the most desired wrecks. Yesterday's result was tough, but not enough to bring us down. The goal of attending the World Cup 2022 is still very much alive and we know what we have to do to get there. No excuses. Portugal bound for Qatar.

Ronaldo's message on Instagram expressed disappointment and also kept hope alive and motivated his teammates and also assured his countrymen that the team will earn qualification by all means.
