The just-concluded CONCACAF Gold Cup had a surprise entry as the highest goalscorer of the tournament. Qatari international, Almoez Ali came to the tournament as an unknown but is leaving as quite the star. His popularity might have been limited to the Asian continent but he has now announced himself on the world stage with an impressive outing at the Gold Cup.
Ali, who plays for Qatar Stars League side, Al-Duhail scored 4 goals in 5 matches with his goals coming against Panama (1), Grenada (1), and in the Quarterfinals against El Salvador (2). He could not salvage his side in the semi-finals as they lost 0-1 to the United States. Qatar were invitational guests to the CONCACAF Gold Cup this year as they prepare to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Ali is a prolific goalscorer, holding the record for the most goals scored in the Asian Cup when he netted 9 times in the 2019 Asian Cup. He led his Qatari team to win Gold in that competition. He is a 24-year-old born in Sudan and has played in Austria, Belgium and Spain before moving back to Qatar. He has scored 46 goals in 165 senior matches for his club side. However, his international record is more impressive, scoring 34 goals in 22 matches. Ali Almoez is reported to be worth between $1m and $5m as of 2020.
