Lionel Messi did not play in the previous Inter Miami MLS game against Orlando City last night. The Argentine star played in the Inter Miami match in Canada against CF Montreal this past weekend, but he did receive a rough challenge, which caused him to go down and receive treatment. Messi continued to play after going in during the CF Montreal game, but he missed the Orlando City match. Argentina fans are worried since the 2024 Copa America is close and wonder if his injury could be serious. Reliable Argentine journalist Gaston Edul reported that Messi was indeed not playing the match last night as a precaution and that he doesn’t have a muscular injury on his leg. Other reports suggest that Messi is expected to be fully recovered by this weekend as Inter Miami will face DC United at the Chase Stadium.
Messi and the Argentina National Team will make their debut in the 2024 Copa America on June 20th against Canada in the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Their second match in the group stage will be against Chile on June 25th at the MetLife Stadium. Their last group stage match will be against Peru at the Hard Rock Stadium. Messi and Argentina will try to defend the title that they won in the 2021 Copa America in Brazil at the Maracana Stadium.
The Argentina national team has confirmed the two friendlies they will have before the Copa America. On June 9th, Argentina will have a friendly match against Ecuador at the Soldier Field. The friendly against Guatemala will be at the FedEx Field. If Messi is fully healed by the next few weeks, the Argentine star is expected to be in the Argentina camp for the friendlies and, of course, for the Copa America.
Inter Miami manager Tata Martino asked if Messi could potentially play in the next Inter Miami game against DC United. Martino said, “The plan is for him to play...but we will deal with the matter day by day. We will see how he feels on Thursday and Friday.”
