Cruz Azul broke a 23-year streak of failing to win the Mexican championship and won its ninth title this past Clausura 2021. With this championship, Cruz Azul broke a drought of almost 24 years without a title by winning its ninth star in Mexico's first division, making it one of the winningest teams in the Mexican league.
Cruz Azul thus added 9 titles in Mexican soccer 1968-69, Mexico-1970, 1971-72, 1972-73, 1973-74, 1978-79, 1979-80 and the last conquest was on December 7, 1997 when the Peruvian Juan Reynoso, who is now the team's coach, participated as a central defender to win the title.
With this championship, Cruz Azul climbs to fourth place among Mexico's most successful teams behind América, Chivas and Toluca.
