The tournament that brought together the year before the World Cup the champions of the six confederations that exist in soccer (AFC in Asia, CAF in Africa, CONCACAF in the North, Central America and Caribbean zone, CONMEBOL in South America, UEFA in Europe and OFC in Oceania).
Plus the reigning World Cup champion and the host of the World Cup, will not be held again. Just 10 years after the first edition, and with Germany as the last winner in 2017, FIFA has decided to cancel the tournament.
The first of the reasons is due to the Qatar 2022 World Cup itself. The Confederations Cup was supposed to be held in June of the previous year, but as with the next edition of the World Cup, the high temperatures in the Qatari country during the summer months make it impossible to hold it.
Although the calendar of the different world club leagues will be modified to hold the World Cup between November 21 and December 18, 2022, this could not be done in 2021 for the Confederations Cup.
