Toluca proved their league contenders status when they brought down league leaders, Club America to earth in their Liga MX match on 18th September. Santiago Solari's Club America side went into the Matchday 9 game undefeated in the league with a record of 6 wins and 2 draws. Toluca was also in a good run of form, having won 2 and drawn 1 of the last 2 league games before hosting Club America at the Estadio Nemesio Diez. This is how the match went.

Toluca Vs. Club America Match Report

The top-of-the-table clash started in a frenetic fashion as hosts, Toluca took the lead in just the second minute of the encounter through defender H. Ortega's goal. Though, America was only behind for a few minutes as their talismanic striker, Henry Martin, levelled the scores through a 6th-minute goal. The game then settled down as both sides weighed each other. Until the 36th minute when Samudio put Toluca in front to the exhilaration of their home crowd.

Despite going a man down early in the second half through Baeza's sending off and Club America throwing on Aguilera and Lainez on the 57th minute in a bid to capitalise on the numerical advantage, Toluca held on. And incredibly, they cemented their lead through a third goal scored by Ortega who put the game beyond the reach of Solari's men. There was still time for a raft of substitutions for Club America, a red card for America's Caceres and a Sambueza missed penalty that could have made the match ended 4-1.

Club America unbeaten run broken by Toluca

Club America and Toluca long-time rivals

Club America has started this Liga MX Apertura season spectacularly, going on an incredible 5-game 100% run after their Matchday 1 goalless draw with Queretaro. Solari's side squashed Necaxa (2-1), Puebla (2-0), Atlas (1-0), Juarez (2-1), and Club Tijuana (2-0). America drew with Leon on Matchday 7 but got back to winning ways against Mazatlan in a 2-0 convincing home win. Toluca has now brought that run of undefeated games to an end.

Now level on points at the top of the Liga MX with Toluca, Club America must pick maximum points in the matches against Guadalajara, Pachuca, Pumas UNAM, Atletico San Luis, and Santos Laguna before they face the deadly duo of Tigres UANL and Monterrey on consecutive weekends to end the month of October.
