Germany national team progressed in their bid to qualify for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 by defeating fellow European country Romania 2-1, coming from behind to overcome an early scare from the Romanians.

Romania opened the scoring in the first 45 minutes and went into the halftime with a 1-0 lead away from home. The Germans had 45 minutes to respond and avoid suffering an embarrassing result against the Romanians for the first time in 17 years and they did just that.

The Germans equalised early enough in the second half to retain the hope of amending the record through Bayern Munich star Serge Gnabry. He drew the Germans level and gave them the hope of completing a comeback. The clock was ticking away and it looked like the points would be shared when another Bayern Munich player Thomas Muller scored the winner.

Germany boosted their points at the top of the group and increased their chances of a direct qualification to the FIFA World Cup next year in Qatar. They have 18 points, six points ahead of second placed North Macedonia and wil qualify if they get four more points.
