Mexico will face the United States this Friday with the hope of adding three points that will keep it as the only leader in the eighth final of the Qualifiers heading to Qatar 2022. The ‘Tri’ will try to win with their best weapons; however, the statistics do not accompany them. Visiting the stars and stripes was always a difficult task.
In the last 49 years, the Aztec team has only managed to win one World Cup qualifying match in the United States. It happened in the process towards Ruisa 2018. The then team led by Juan Carlos Osorio, prevailed with a score of 2-1 with goals from Miguel Layún and Rafael Márquez, beginning the path that would end with the team as the best classified in Concacaf.
This triumph ended a 48-year streak in which Mexico did not win on US soil for a qualifying match for the World Cup. The only triumph before 2016 was in 1972, when they defeated "the Yankees" 2-1 at the Memorial Colisem in Los Angeles.
The most recent records between these two teams indicate that each has four wins and two draws. Since 2001, they have met 10 times and the numbers have been similar on both sides.
