Chelsea may have to wait till next year before participating in the 2021 FIFA Club World Cup after reports circulating in the media that world football governing body FIFA may postpone the event till 2022. Japan pulled out of hosting the event in August and consideration is being made towards hosting it in South Africa.

Chelsea earned the right to participate after winning the 2021 UEFA Champions League, the second time in their history. They will be hoping to win the competition for the first time and avoid a repeat of the 2012 FIFA Club World Cup where they lost in the final to Brazilian club Corinthians.

The tournament among the six continental champions is originally scheduled for December 9-19, 2021 but it's looking increasingly likely it will be played next year with FIFA considering all it's options including playing it in Africa at Johannesburg, South Africa.

The winner of the competition is awarded a trophy as well as a cash prize of $10m while the runners up takes $6m. Bayern Munich won the tournament in 2020. They beat the CONCACAF Champions League winners Tigres UANL in the final by a lone goal.
