The countdown to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the most anticipated event for soccer fans around the world to be played from November 21 to December 18, has begun. This Wednesday at 13:00 Doha time and 5:00 am US Eastern Time, the ticket application phase opened, with a wide variety of options and reduced prices mainly for local residents and migrant workers.

Where and until when can I purchase the first phase of ticket sales?

Until February 8, applications may be submitted on the official FIFA website during this first window. The date on which applications are submitted is irrelevant, as all tickets requested will be allocated once the phase has concluded. In the event that demand exceeds the available supply for the national or international market, tickets will be allocated by random selection.

All fan applicants will receive a communication before March 8, informing them whether their application has been partially or fully accepted - or rejected - and giving them further instructions on how to proceed with the procedure to pay for the allocated tickets.

Ticket Prices

According to the policy implemented by FIFA, similar to the one implemented in the last three previous editions of the World Cup (Russia 2018, Brazil 2014, and South Africa 2010), a special price category has been reserved for residents of the host country and migrant workers, who will be able to purchase tickets starting at just $11. As for ordinary fans, they will pay around $69 for individual matches and a ticket for the final could cost up to $1,607.

It is also possible to request tickets to follow a specific team, season tickets for four different stadiums on consecutive days, or tickets for special sectors in the stadiums. Payment is made with international credit cards once they are awarded but Visa is the preferred payment solution for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

There will be a second phase of ticket sales

Prior to the draw for the Qatar 2022 World Cup on Friday, April 1, fans are scheduled to have a second chance to secure seats during a first-come, first-served sales phase. After the draw, the phases of the following sales will gradually be opened, which will include additional products: fan tickets for those who wish to sit alongside other fans of their national team, and conditional fan tickets for those who reserve a ticket for one of their team's possible matches in the knockout rounds, including the final.

Given the short distances between the stadiums, Qatar will give fans the opportunity to watch more than one match per day during the early stages of the competition. In the ticketing phase that will begin after the draw, fans will be able to register for more than one match per day, but not consecutively.

Household ticket limits reduced

In order for fans to take advantage of this World Cup, FIFA chose to reduce the ticket limits per household that were in place at previous World Cups. Now a single household can purchase up to six tickets per match and a total of 60 tickets for the entire competition. "This is a World Cup for Qatar, for the region, and for the world, so the ticket types introduced today are in line with FIFA's goal to bring the beautiful game to as many fans around the world as possible," said FIFA Secretary General Fatma Samoura.

You will carry a special ID

For this World Cup, the Hay'ya Card (Fan ID) will be mandatory to enter the country, access the stadiums (along with the mandatory entrance fee), and, among other advantages, travel free of charge on match days. FIFA and the Qatari government have not yet announced the health guidelines for the COVID-19 pandemic.

"All attendees must follow the travel instructions of the Qatari authorities and the guidelines of the Qatari Ministry of Health. Full information on pandemic security measures will be communicated prior to the start of the competition," FIFA said.

Organizers have predicted that up to 1.2 million visitors will arrive to cheer on the 32 teams, as the Omicron variant continues to wreak havoc in many countries. Seven stadiums have been built and one has been refurbished, but as there will not be enough hotels, some fans may have to stay in cruise ships or residences for the event.
