Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal could not save themselves in Lisbon as they fell to a 1-2 home loss to Serbia and would have to face playoffs if they will be in Qatar next year.

Portugal needed just a draw to proceed to Qatar automatically and took the lead in the eight minutes through Lille's midfielder Renato Sanches and were pegged back by a Dusan Tadic's equaliser before Aleksandar Mitrovic struck late on to break Portuguese hearts.

Cristiano Ronaldo who also failed to score in the last match against Republic of Ireland also failed to hit the target today despite playing the full 90 minutes. Portugal will now go through the hard way of qualifying through playoffs.

The playoff will be competed in by the 10 second placed teams and the two top ranked teams in the UEFA Nations League who are yet to qualify. Scotland, Russia, North Macedonia, Portugal, Sweden have all qualified for the playoffs that will be played next year March.
