Argentina and Uruguay have one of the oldest rivalries in history. The first edition of the Río de La Plata Classic was the first national team match played outside the British Isles and began a rivalry that has lasted for more than a hundred years.  The first confrontation between the two was on May 16, 1901, in Montevideo, and ended with a 3-2 victory for the Albiceleste. Since then, the duel took place in all existing official competitions - including a World Cup final - and has a wide advantage for the Albiceleste at a general level.

Prior to this last 1-0 victory in the Copa América 2021, the last time Argentina and Uruguay had seen each other was on November 18, 2019, in an international friendly played in Israel, which ended in a 2-2 draw. with goals from Suárez and Cavani for La Celeste and Agüero and Messi, from a penalty, for Albiceleste.

Argentina and Uruguay met for the first time in the Qualifiers on January 12, 1997, in qualifying for the World Cup in France in '98. It was a 0-0 draw in Montevideo. They were due to meet in March 2021 on the way to Qatar 2022, but the match was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The continental competition is, logically, the competition in which both selected teams met the most times. And the record favors Argentina only by a game difference. The last time for this tournament was on June 18, 2021 in the Cup of that edition, in Brazil: it was 1-0 for Albiceleste with a goal from Guido Rodríguez.
