The winning of the first edition of the CONCACAF Nations League, defeating arch-rivals Mexico in extra time, has become an important milestone in the history of the United States national team in international soccer.

Compared to the other CONCACAF giant, the U.S. is still a long way off in terms of championships, and there have been more occasions in which El Tri has defeated them in subcontinental matches; what's more, it is far behind its female counterpart, who have been world champions, and on several occasions.

In terms of championships, the United States is the second most winning country in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, having won it seven times: 1991, 2002, 2005, 2005, 2007, 2013, 2017 and 2021; in addition to winning the first edition of the Nations League, beating Mexico 3-2.

In addition, Team USA has two fourth-place finishes in Copa América (1995 and 2016), a fourth-place finish in the 2000 Sydney Olympics and a runner-up finish in the Confederations Cup in South Africa 2009, where it lost 3-2 to Brazil.

Its best result was third place in the 1930 World Cup in Uruguay, making it the only team outside South America and Europe to have achieved such a place in a World Cup. In the 1950 World Cup in Brazil, they won a historic victory over the inventors of soccer, England, 1-0. After that, the Americans failed in the World Cup qualifiers for many years, until they qualified for the 1990 World Cup in Italy after a 40-year absence. The U.S. hosted the 1994 World Cup and the team finished in the round of 16. In the 2002 World Cup, they reached the quarterfinals, their second best performance in the World Cups. It has played 7 consecutive editions in the World Cups, from 1990 to 2014.

Its main rival is Mexico, with whom it plays the Concacaf classic.
