Just a few months separate the ball from a new World Cup. Qatar 2022 will be the first to be played in the Middle East and the first to be held at the end of the calendar year, between November and December. Eight stadiums will host the event in just five Qatari cities: Lusail, Al Khor, Al Rayyan, Al Wakrah, and Doha.

The Qatar 2022 World Cup will feature 32 teams, as has been the case since France 1998 (until then, a maximum of 24 teams had played in the World Cup), and will be the last World Cup with this number of countries before it expands to 48 teams in 2026.

There will be 31 teams that can earn the right to compete since the host is automatically qualified. Each continent has an assigned number of representatives:

The two intercontinental playoffs, which will feature one country from each of the four regions that have that extra possibility, will determine the last two qualifiers. The draw made at the end of November last year resulted in the crossings between the representative of Asia and South America and the representative of North America and Oceania.

Which teams have qualified for the Qatar 2022 World Cup?

A total of 19 teams have officially qualified for the tournament, including the host country. That leaves 13 slots to be filled in the coming months.

In addition to the host, Qatar, 10 European countries have secured their presence, as have Brazil and Argentina in South America.

Opening match: Monday, November 21, 2022.
